Top 20 WA Songs of 2016

Thank you for voting for your favourite Western Australian songs of 2016 in this years countdown. It is the fourth time Live and Local 89.7fm have conducted the unique public poll which attracted over 2,500 votes this year.

Produced by Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker, jazz-rap collective Koi Child dominated everything this year and it is no surprise the four-time WAM Award winners landed number 1 spot with their single “1-5-9”. Koi Child will be hitting both Southbound and Laneway Festival stages this summer so if you have not caught this incredible live outfit then you have plenty of opportunities coming up.

San Cisco released a couple of singles off their forthcoming album set to be released in 2017 and made a late charge into second place with “SloMo”, another great pop groove that makes you want to move. The only artist to secure two songs in the Top 20 list was upcoming rock act Psychedelic Porn Crumpets who had third place with “Cornflake” and fifteenth place with “Cubensis Lenses”. The band’s album High Visceral [Part 1] has been on high rotation at Live and Local all year and they will close out 2016 with a headline spot at The Rosemount Hotel NYE Fiesta.

Chiseko, who is a part of the Four AM Collective, landed fourth place. The Four AM Collective are a group of artists describing themselves as collaborators wanting to do something different for the Perth music scene and Chiseko teamed up with collective member, JCAL, to land fourth place with “Juice”. Together with Ziggy who was voted in at eleventh place with his single “Black Face”, it has proved to be a good year for Western Australian hip-hop acts with the likes of Koi Child, Chiseko, and Ziggy all making strong appearances in the list.

The youngest act to appear in the list was high-school students Moth who were number 12 with their single “Circles”. The young indie rock group played live in the studio earlier in the year, winning a lot of fans with their take on Mac DeMarco. Moth surprised us again playing live in the studio but this time covering Darwin Deez’s “Radar Detector” for the audience.

The lucky last number 20 spot was shared this year with the votes tied between long time live music scene favourites These Winter Nights and songstress Georgia Reed. These Winter Nights who have played a number of live shows over the years including Live and Local’s Locally Baked at The Bakery in 2015 finally released a single, “Hearts on Fire” which was always going to be popular with loyal fans. Georgia Reed’s powerful vocals also won a lot of support since she dropped by the 89.7 studios earlier in the year and she has one of the more alluring songs in the list this year with “Waiting for You to Run”.

Thank you for voting and congratulations to all the artists that won a spot in the Top 20. A full summary of the list is here and you can also listen to the SoundCloud playlist compilation.
