Reflect on history and engage in meaningful commemorations through activities that resonate across generations.
The outpouring of respect and appreciation for those who fought at Gallipoli one hundred and nine years ago led a community in the new suburb of Mount Hawthorn to construct a memorial. This tribute to the armed forces had a double purpose: It also provided a home for a returned wounded soldier and his family. Those long-ago citizens contributed their meagre funds, materials and skills to this ambitious project, a brick and tile building constructed in one day.
The Friends of ANZAC Cottage invite you to come together and commemorate our armed forces and their work to ensure our safety and security and to recognise the work of the generous volunteers over a century ago.
Commemorations will include the Field of Remembrance, honouring the ancestors of community members, a children’s wearable art activity, and our annual visit from the remarkable Maori Cultural group, Ngaru Pou, ensuring that the “NZ” in ANZAC is never forgotten.
The day concludes at 5 pm with the evocative Sunset Service, a community-based commemoration featuring the younger generation and their perspective on this significant day.
